Who wiped the Smile from Smiley's face ?
Did Smiley Culture commit suicide, as the police claimed?
Say I'm being pedantic if you like, but like many others, I reckon this is another typical case of a black man's tragedy under the most peculiar of circumstances.
According to police, on Tuesday the 15th of March, British reggae star Smiley Culture stabbed himself with a kitchen knife, during a raid on his home in Surrey London.
It may very well be the truth, police claiming that Smiley was allowed to go in the kitchen and "make himself a cup of tea" but how out of sync is it, regarding correct police procedures, that Smiley was allowed to walk about unsurpervised?
Secondly, what drove a man, described as a pleasant and calm person, to commit such vicious suicide?
The "self inflicted" wound to the heart is described as deep and brutal, so much that the penetration entered one end and exited at the other.
Understandably, the family is calling foul play, and like many others, demanding answers. The inquest was opened and adjourned to a date to be fixed, pending further inquires, while the Independent Police Complaints Comission (IPCC) investigates.
David "Smiley Culture" Emmanuel, born in England and of strong Jamaican family ties, had a few reggae hits. His biggest hit, Police Officer, went to number 12 in the UK charts back in 1984. If you dig the vintage sound of the likes of Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Josey Wales, Major Worries, Peter Metro, Papa Levi...et al, you will like Smiley Culture.
All these names will appear when you youtube Smiley Culture. Smiley also played a cameo role in Absolute Beginners, a David Bowie film, back in 1986. He was recently featured in the BBC4 documentary, Reggae Britinnia, which explored the rise of UK reggae.
The Brittish reggae singer was due to face trial this week, accused of conspiracy to supply cocain. He died at age 48. While it is certain that Smiley won't be smiling again, sadly, it is far from convincing that he permanently wiped the smile from his own face.
I'm watching the space as things unfold, but I think I already know the outcome.
